BEF 5K

Our class recently did a phenomenal job running the mile!  There are 2 phenomenal options to continue to increase our physical activity this upcoming weekend.  Please read the information below and consider running.  I have taken part in this race and it is really fun.  I hope to be a participant again this year, so maybe I will see you out there! Our Blizzard Bag Site Is Live

We are excited to have the opportunity to pilot learning projects for school day cancellations. We will be the first district in the state of Massachusetts to try this with the assigned “Blizzard Bag” work that is available on this BPS Blizzard Bag site. As with any pilot, we expect that there will be a lot of questions and that not everything will proceed exactly as planned. However, we are committed to offering multiple methods to support students so that they can complete their work successfully.

Questions will be answered live on our Blizzard Bag phone line at 1 (512) SNOWDAY (1-512-766-9329) on Tuesday, April 28 from 4-7 p.m. Voice messages and texts can also be sent to this number during the duration of the assignment and will be responded to daily. In the meantime, we have also created an e-mail address where you can send questions (blizzardbags@bpsk12.org). We will share all of the questions asked on a “Frequently Asked Questions” section that will be added on this Blizzard Bag site.

Of course, your student’s classroom teachers are also a great resource for questions and we will be adding support opportunities that are available at individual schools in the days ahead as well on the website. Teachers will be checking in with their students during the week ofMay 4, which is the midpoint of the projects, to make sure that students are making progress. It is our hope that at least half of the assignment will be completed at this time. If students have any questions about expectations or length of assignments, they should ask their teachers.

Our final due date for the assignments is June 1, 2015. If students complete their work prior to that date, they are welcome to turn them in early to their teachers. Since the work is meant to be substituted for two days of school, all students who do not complete the work will be marked absent for two days. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work through this pilot. We look forward to your feedback along the way.

Presenters Needed:

Outside Presenters: Outside presenters with a vehicle: You will speak with different groups of children from grades K-5 every 10-15 minutes from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM.

Inside Presenters: You will speak to a different group of children every 15 minutes. The children will rotate through the various rooms from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

We will need all presenters to arrive by 8:45 AM to set up.

LegoLand Fun!

The fourth grade traveled to LegoLand Discovery Center in Somerville, MA to explore the idea of engineering and to test their knowledge of force and motion.  We saw some amazing things made of Lego!

Tristan and CJ got read to board the elevators to the top floor.

We were really excited to begin our adventure!

We got directions from Lego people about how to make Lego characters.

There were replicas of major Boston landmarks all made out of Lego!

Joey and CJ tried not to touch the metal against the metal or it would buzz.

Theo, CJ, and Tristan cheered on their friends as they went through the Ninja maze.

Alyvia was ready for the ride, while Emma gets buckled in.

There were Lego blocks everywhere!

Our task was to make a car out of Lego that we could test on the track. 

Teamwork was key!

Read Across America

To celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America on March 2nd, we dressed "Seussically" and visited Mrs. Parnell's kindergarten class to read Dr. Seuss books together.  Our fourth graders loved the opportunity to share some of their favorite books with our new friends.  Check out the pictures of our awesome outfits and our reading adventures below!

PARCC Parent Tech Night

The BPS EdTech Team will be hosting a Parent Tech Night on Wednesday, March 18 from 6-8PM at Marshall Simonds Middle School. Join us to learn about the 2015 Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments for grades 3-8 in Burlington schools. Participants will be able to explore practice tests and experience features of the PARCC TestNav application being used by students during the assessments.

Burlington students in grades 3-8 will be completing the PARCC assessments for English Language Arts and Math during the week of March 23-27. Students will be using their 1:1 iPads for the tests. The BPS EdTech and IT Teams have been preparing student devices and helping to support teachers and students for the upcoming assessments.

Water Cycle Reader's Theater

During the past few weeks we have been practicing reading with expression.  To reinforce this skill, we worked with Mrs. Ardizzoni and Miss Fallon to take part in a Reader's Theatre about the Water Cycle.  We practiced our lines and read them from cue cards while wearing "costumes" in front of the green screen.  We even drew our own backgrounds that will show up behind us in the final project.  Check out our progress below:

The water cycle begins with the sun and water.

Tristan and Alyvia were ocean droplets that turned into water vapor.

Emma learned the importance of the sun to beginning evaporation.

Theo learned that water vapor turns into a cloud.

Brian condensed to become a snowflake that falls out of the cold cloud.

Ellie and Catalina melted into stream water and river water droplets riding the rapids.

Caitlyn and Paul learned what it would be like in a reservoir and to be tapwater.  I hope nobody drinks them or brushes their teeth with them. Ew!

From there, CJ learned what it would be like to be in a drain pipe.  Yikes!

Ayden was proud to be the sewage processing plant that "can even give bath water a bath!"

The process begins again as the water returns to the ocean.

Mrs. Ardizzoni used an ipad to video us.

 While others recorded their parts, we did an art activity to demonstrate the water cycle.
