Star Wars and The Hour of Code
Yesterday, Mrs. Ardizzoni came to our class to teach us about coding. We realized that there are almost a million kids and adults around the world that are participating in the Hour of Code. It was perfect timing because the Star Wars movie came out today and we got to write code to move droids around. When we finished the 15 levels, we received a certificate of completion. You, too, can check out this fun activity by checking out the website: www.hourofcode.com.

Give a Hoot
Pine Glen has a new positive reinforcement school-wide program in place. We are going to ASK if our behavior:
A: Is it appropriate?
S: Is it safe?
K: Is it kind?
When staff notices students acting in this manner, they will give a HOOT. These "hoots" will be collected and displayed around the school. There will be prizes provided to classes once we receive a certain number of hoots.
Ms. Pavlicek was on hand to introduce us to a real hooting creature, a barred owl named Scout. Check out the photos below.

Number Corner Reveal...
During the month of September we learned about Egyptian symbols. Each day we kept track of the symbols and related them to our modern numbers. We learned that the pattern was multiples of 11. I challenged the students during the second week of school and then the parents at Open House to predict what the symbols on the last card would be. Here is the reveal of the final day:
Missy adds to our calendar and chart during the last week of September. |
We looked at our predictions to see if anyone was correct. |
Kevin flipped over our final card. Even though there are only 30 days in September, we had 31 cards. |
Our 31st card show 3 scrolls, 2 heel bones, and 1 staff, which equals 341. 31X11 =341 |
May the Force Be With You!
A force is a push or a pull. Did you know that an object at rest will remain at rest until a force acts upon it? This week we experimented with how to apply force to a mass by pushing and pulling our friends on the swings. One student was the recorder who told the force what to do with the "mass" that sat on the swing.
Cora records how Missy starts moving Derrick. |
Ryan watches as Dylan makes Aesha go faster. |
Kevin practices changing Pedro's direction. |
Dylan draws a diagram to show how Aesha is slowing down Ryan's movement. |
Pedro videos Erin stopping Kevin's motion. |
Shira explains the directions to Nolan and Alexis. |
The 207ers did an amazing job demonstrating force and motion this week! |

Judy reads
Judy was a volunteer during our first Bridges Program, which is a wonderful inter-generational program that brings seniors into our classrooms to do activities with our students. This program will take place at Pine Glen toward the end of the year. Judy continues to volunteer biweekly in our classroom by reading a story to us. This is a great opportunity for our students to hear both fiction and nonfiction stories that pertain to what we are learning in class. Today Judy read The Wondrous Whirligig by Andrew Glass. This story aligns perfectly with our studies of force, motion and flight as it is about the Wright Brothers and their first ideas of flight.

What is a Social Scientist?
Our first chapter in Social Studies is about Social Scientists. A social scientist is a person who studies how people live in a group. There are 4 different Social Scientists.
An Economist studies the way people in a community use resources to meet their needs and wants. They study how people make, buy, and sell things. The artifacts that an economist uses are receipts, price tags, advertisements, and items you have recently bought.
A Geographer studies the Earth's surface. They study natural features like plants, animals, land features, and water. They also study constructed, or man-made features like bridges, roads, and cities. The artifacts a geographer looks at are maps, weather reports, and articles about nature.
A Political Scientist studies government, who is in power, and how they use that power. They look at artifacts such as election ads, legal forms, voter information, and news stories about law and government.
Historians study the past. They look at events and ask why and how did this happen. Historians study artifacts such as birth certificates, family photos, letters, diaries, and family treasures.

Red, White and Blue for Heroes
On September 11th, we celebrated our heroes with an assembly that honored our Burlington police and firefighters, as well as those that serve in our military. Our 5th grade Chorus sang songs and spoke about what it means to be a hero. The third graders wrote letters to the police and firefighters, reading some of them aloud. I love that Pine Glen continues to uphold this tradition so that we may Never Forget.
We wore red, white and blue to show our solidarity and love for our heroes.
Check out our spirit!
